NBC’s rules expert Terry McAulay later criticized the call, stating Wallace did not obstruct Bryant’s route. He also noted Bryant had grabbed Wallace during the throw, further complicating the officiating decision. The ruling ignited discussion among fans and analysts about its fairness.
The Rams faced additional officiating challenges before the final play. Over the last two minutes, they were hit with five penalties, matching the most recorded by any team in a single game since 2000. These issues echoed a similar defensive pass interference call earlier in the day that benefited the Baltimore Ravens, fueling concerns about inconsistent officiating across the league.
