A Pittsburgh Steelers coach spent years building a sprawling Minecraft city—not as a hobby, but as a way to bond with his children and later unwind after high-pressure games. The result, unveiled in a YouTube series, is a meticulously designed urban environment blending luxury residences, sports venues, and personal touches like a college-themed high-rise. Tomlin began the project shortly after 8:00 p.m. Eastern on a Tuesday night in October, with the real highlight being his Minecraft reveal. What started as a casual way to connect with his kids, while they were still playing the game, evolved into a decade-long passion project, refined long after they’d moved on to other interests.
From Podcast Tease to Public Debut
Mike Tomlin revealed his secret project during a podcast in September. He described Minecraft as a long-running escape, one he’d taken up after his kids moved on to other games. Rather than abandoning the platform, he kept refining his virtual city, adding layers of detail over a decade. The first public hint came weeks earlier on The Glass Half Full Podcast with Craig Melvin, where he teased the possibility of sharing his creation with the world.

On Wednesday, he shared the first episode of his series, titled Rooftops, Penthouses, and Urban Living. The tour began with his earliest creation: a boutique hotel featuring a basement speakeasy and a conference room. Later segments showcased a high-end penthouse with a rooftop lounge and an MLS stadium he promised to reveal in future installments. In Episode 1, Tomlin, dressed in a grey quarter-zip, gave viewers a glimpse of his meticulous work, including a CVS pharmacy and a riverfront office complex, while emphasizing his fixation on waterfront properties and high-end residences. He even joked about his “Jack and Jill bedroom concepts,” complete with multiple sinks, a detail that became a fan favorite.
A Coach’s Unusual Way to Unwind
The episode ends with a tease: Episode 2 will dive deeper into the city’s infrastructure, including the promised MLS stadium. For now, the first installment stands as proof that even in a league obsessed with strategy, creativity can take unexpected forms. You can watch Episode 1 here.
