Not a single observe or phrase in any of those pieces is wasted or superfluous. Indeed, the second prelude of the second set, “Leaping Lightly,” could be the most innovative of all of them, utilizing opposing syncopated figures between the 2 palms to create a beat that seems like a Sousa march working backwards! One could virtually hear these preludes, of their entirety, as a group of different solutions to totally different musical puzzles, even more like a kaleidoscope than a mosaic. For essentially the most part, the first set of preludes appear to be extra “active” music while the second set seems extra atmospheric and “reflective,” however happily, not within the Romantic-drippy fashion that appears to be all the fad with Millennials these days. Nonetheless, the music of the second set is clearly more fragmented in structure and never almost as linear as the first.
