Rutgers football falls to Michigan in Big Ten rout

Rutgers football suffered another narrow defeat, losing 28–21 to Michigan in a Big Ten showdown that left the Scarlet Knights at 2–6 on the year. This was their sixth consecutive game allowing at least 25 points. The team’s struggles became especially clear on third down, where they managed just 3 of 12 conversions, roughly one-quarter of their chances, while Michigan converted 12 of 16. Rutgers have won just one game in Big Ten conference play this season.

Michigan’s offense controlled the game, with freshman quarterback Tommy Carr throwing for 266 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for two more scores on just two carries for 54 yards. Defense didn’t have an answer for Carr, who completed 22-of-27 passes. Rutgers’ offense managed only nine first downs, as quarterback AJ Surace completed 3 of 12 passes for 123 yards and a single touchdown. Running back Antwan Raymond contributed 85 rushing yards, but neither the passing nor running attack demonstrated sustained effectiveness.

The defense’s failure to halt Michigan on third down proved decisive. Schiano observed that the offense struggled to capitalize on opportunities against what he described as the best defense they had faced this season. “We just went out and scored more points than anybody has against what I think is statistically the best defense,” he said. “So, am I pleased with really anything other than the points? Not really.”
