Indian football officials believe British players of Indian heritage will soon be permitted to represent the national team, a change that could transform the country’s global ambitions.
Rules may soon allow overseas players to wear India’s colors
Current regulations prevent Indian-origin footballers abroad from playing for India unless they give up their foreign passports. This restriction has blocked talent like former Newcastle striker Michael Chopra and Millwall defender Danny Batth from playing for the national side, despite their willingness to do so.
A senior official stated he is certain the path will open for eligible overseas players. Arunava Chaudhuri, former chief operating officer of Mumbai City FC, said the adjustment could strengthen the squad before major events like the 2036 Olympic bid.

“Diaspora footballers from Europe can raise the level of play,” Chaudhuri said. “The impact could extend beyond the sport itself.”
The change would reverse policies that have long restricted India’s access to dual-nationality players. The country currently sits at 124th in FIFA’s world rankings, a position officials aim to improve with new talent.
The proposal has been discussed before. In 2014, Chopra revealed Sachin Tendulkar had offered to help him join the national team. Three years later, Batth, whose father was born in Punjab, expressed frustration over the obstacles.
Other nations, including Algeria and Morocco, have loosened eligibility rules to include diaspora players. India’s potential shift follows a similar approach, though no timeline has been set.

West Ham chief Virani targets Premier League return
West Ham interim chief executive officer Karim Virani wants the club to continue driving positive change, but admits the main goal is to make an immediate return to the Premier League.
The Hammers beat Leeds United in their final game last season, but it wasn’t enough to prevent them from finishing 18th and suffering relegation.
“As we look ahead to the new [league] season, it’s less than a week now and we have our first match, which has come around incredibly quickly,” Virani said.
