The Atlanta Dream are one win away from their first WNBA Finals appearance in 13 years after a 101-98 overtime victory over the New York Liberty in Game 2 of their semifinal series. This thrilling win at State Farm Arena showcased the Dream’s resilience, especially with Allisha Gray sidelined due to a finger injury.
Despite missing Gray, the Dream secured a 2-0 series lead thanks to clutch performances from Naz Hillmon and Angel Reese. Hillmon’s late basket and Reese’s key free throws were key in sealing the victory, even as the Liberty mounted a fierce comeback.
Reese, Canada Lead Balanced Attack
All five Atlanta starters scored in double figures, with Reese and Jordin Canada leading the way. Canada’s perimeter shooting, alongside Rhyne Howard, was instrumental in the Dream’s offensive success. Even Reese contributed from beyond the arc, showcasing her versatility. The Dream’s ability to distribute scoring across their lineup has been a key factor in their recent dominance.
The Liberty, led by Breanna Stewart, fought hard but fell short. Stewart’s 25 first-half points were a sign of her skill, as she attacked from all areas of the court. However, her efforts weren’t enough to overcome Atlanta’s relentless three-point shooting and defensive intensity.

Defensive Stops Prove Key
The game featured strong defense from both teams, particularly in the fourth quarter. Reese’s block on Sabrina Ionescu was a highlight, igniting the crowd and showing her Defensive Player of the Year credentials. Her ability to disrupt New York’s offense was key in maintaining Atlanta’s lead. Additionally, the Dream’s defensive pressure forced a critical turnover from Ionescu late in the game, which proved decisive.
While the Dream built a six-point lead late in regulation, the Liberty forced overtime with a Marine Fauthoux three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining. Fauthoux’s shot, assisted by Stewart, was a moment of brilliance, but Atlanta responded with poise in the extra period. And the Dream got just that when Reese scored in the paint and Howard converted an and-1 to open up a six-point advantage in the final two minutes.
Yet it wasn’t enough to win in regulation. Ionescu hit an important three, but it was the triple from Fauthoux with 10 seconds remaining that stood out the most. She caught Stewart’s pass in rhythm and buried the open look, while Howard’s potential game-winner rimmed out on the ensuing possession. Despite the stunning finish to the fourth quarter, the Dream dominated overtime, securing the win with timely plays on both ends of the floor.
The Dream now hold a commanding series lead and are poised to advance to the WNBA Finals with a win in Game 3. Their ability to overcome adversity, coupled with their balanced scoring and defensive prowess, makes them a formidable contender for the championship.
