EA Sports College Football 27 entered July’s sales chart at No. 2, trailing only the latest Call of Duty launch on PlayStation consoles, according to tracking firm Circana.
Second‑place debut amid bundle boost
The game’s position would have been first if its bundled sales with the EA Sports MVP Bundle 2026 had been counted separately. The bundle pairs the new college title with Madden NFL, and its combined numbers pushed the package into the top spot.
Mat Piscatella, Circana’s executive director for games, noted that unit sales fell for a second straight month. “The franchise certainly has not maintained the record‑setting performance of the first game,” he said, referencing the 2024 release that broke the series’ own records.
Physical disc revenue hit an all‑time low for the month, dropping to $85 million—the lowest figure recorded since the firm began tracking in 1995. On PlayStation, only 32 percent of new game purchases were on discs, while Nintendo’s Switch stayed above the 50 percent mark.

Player engagement drops sharply
Newzoo’s Gaming Performance Monitor shows a steep decline in active users. Monthly active players for the 2027 title fell 66 percent compared with its predecessor, and overall playtime dropped 61 percent.
In its launch month, the game logged 5.42 million monthly active players, while the previous year’s entry recorded 1.86 million. Those figures are as of Aug. 20, according to Newzoo director of market intelligence Manu Rosier.
Rosier added that the 2024 version launched ten days later in July than the current edition, which may have contributed to the variance. The 2027 release is also the first in the series to appear on PC, expanding its platform footprint.
It’s unrealistic to expect the series to repeat its record‑breaking debut every year. The 2024 launch benefited from a long‑standing gap in the market, and the original college franchise never matched Madden’s popularity. Still, the numbers indicate a solid niche audience for college‑themed football games.
From a broader perspective, the shift toward digital distribution is reshaping how publishers measure success. As physical sales shrink, bundled offers and subscription services become more important for revenue, especially for sports titles that rely on seasonal updates.

Accessory spending also reflected the market’s tilt. Racing controllers were down 26 percent year‑over‑year, a dip Piscatella described as “not super unusual.” Last year’s F1 25 release spurred controller purchases, but this year’s EA Sports lineup focused on a season pack rather than a full‑scale launch, dampening accessory demand.
Among July’s top ten bestsellers, the EA Sports MVP Bundle 2026 ranked fourth, while no other sports game reached the upper tier alongside the college football releases.
Data reporting faces its own hurdles. Microsoft and EA have left Circana’s digital sales panel, meaning the firm now leans more heavily on physical retailer data. Kotaku reported the change, noting that Circana still gathers digital numbers from the remaining panel members.
Both Circana and Newzoo provide useful snapshots of sales and player behavior, but they capture only part of the picture. Publishers retain the full data set, which will likely shape future analyses of the franchise’s performance.
